He saw Inas squatting on the ground in the morgue, sobbing and tightly embracing Saly’s body. “I lost my conscience when I saw the girl, I took her in my arms,” Inas said. “The doctor asked me to let go... but I told them to leave her with me.”

A dermatologist recently looked at me with disdain and asked “Are people like you still alive?”

The answer is: Yes

Hi! My name is Christina. I was born with a rare skin conditional called Ichthyosis. My skin looks like fish scales. Two years before my birth, my brother was born with the same condition… looking like crushed plastic that had been moulding.

My father ( a famous director of the Indian film Industry,) forced my mother to abandon her first born. She was called a “bad woman,” a sinner. My brother died in 5 days.

Two years later I was born looking just like him… a collodion baby with fused fingers and toes, eyelids turned outwards, dry skin and bleeding all over.

This time my mother fought… and so my father left us.

She joined the missionaries. With their support I completed post graduation. But I am an aberration.

97% people with ichthyosis are not educated because institutes do not accept us neither do families allow us to get out of the house.

People like us are left to die. And if we don’t die due to abandonment then we die by the system’s treatment of us. My neighbours often come to spit outside my house. They have spat on my face as well.

But I choose to mute all the noise and focus on my mission to bring Ichthyosis into the public domain from the darkness of neglect, shame and stigma. I want the world to recognise that Ichthyosis is a disability so there is possibility for reasonable accommodation, accessibility, and the fundamental freedom of independent movement for people like me. I have spoken in the UN about this as well and now run a registered charity that supports survivors of ichthyosis.

In 2021, I achieved recognition as a finalist in The International Glamour Project pageant Mrs. India and proudly earned the title of Glamorous Social Activist.

And you know why I step out of darkness each day to do all of this. I do it with the hope that one day this world will normalise visible differences. Our inner landscape is deeply scarred. Help us make the world around us beautiful, accepting and humane.

Who knows what you might learn from taking a chance on conversation with a stranger?

Everyone carries a piece of the puzzle. Nobody comes into your life by mere coincidence. Trust your instincts. Do the unexpected. Find the others…

Are you really going to continue making your life so difficult? In essence, you are causing yourself to be unhappy, then you’re going outside and demanding that the world somehow make you happy. The world cannot make you happy while you’re inside making yourself unhappy. It’s that simple.

You have to work on letting go of the root cause of suffering. The spiritual path is always about letting go of yourself, and that means dealing with the blocked energies. The blocked energies inside are going to build up and need release if you don’t deal with them. These energies may release in the form of anger, verbal or physical fighting, and other bursts of uncontrolled behavior. When you allow the energies to release unconsciously like this, you’re not in charge. The energies will tend to follow the path of least resistance, as determined by the samskaras.

When you allow this to happen, the uncontrolled energy carves channels within you that will make it easier to flow that way again. The energy flow becomes a habit. Not only is “losing it” unhealthy because of what you may say or do outside, but you also increased the probability of losing it in the same way again. This can cause all kinds of trouble. Any time you’re not in charge in there, there’s going to be trouble. It’s that simple.

Sometimes you embark on a long journey not knowing

Sometimes you embark on a long journey not knowing where it will lead you. But you just listen to that inner voice and pure belief that it’s the right path. Despite multiple challenges and countless obstacles, you reach the destination. Storms and heartbreaks followed by rainbows and a ray of sunshine at last. And then you ask yourself: what did the process actually teach you? And why did you want to go there?

Liberatum Salvador, Bahia was one such journey. Absolutely mad to think it was ever achievable but that little bit of madness is what kept us going. Thank you to the wonderfully kind and generous people of Bahia. Thank you to the Universe. Gratitude for all the gracious people in Brazil who believed in our mission.
