LIBERATUM BRAZIL SPECIAL GUEST OF HONOUR – ANGELA BASSETT

The award-winning actress, director and executive producer Angela Bassett will make her first ever visit to Brazil this November as the Special Guest of Honour at Liberatum. Bassett will visit Salvador, Bahia, the cultural heart of Brazil, during the Liberatum landmark celebrations from 2nd-6th November 2023. The Liberatum Cultural Pioneer Award will be bestowed upon Bassett at an official ceremony in the presence of Wole Soyinka, the first Black Nobel Laureate in Literature, in Praça Cairu on 5 November at 6pm during the Liberatum Black Excellence Humanitarian Concert. 

Over 80% of the population of Salvador are of African descent, making it the largest population of people of African-descent in the world outside of the African continent. Liberatum, the global multidisciplinary cultural diplomacy foundation and The Republic of Brazil, will host an historic and significant cultural festival ‘Liberatum Brazil’ with a special spotlight on the cultural contribution of global Black Changemakers and Visionaries, providing a vital source of inspiration to audiences in Brazil. 

Bassett was chosen to be honoured this year because she is worthy of celebration for her captivating performances in iconic films such as Malcolm X, Waiting To Exhale, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Black Panther, Mission Impossible: Fallout, and of course, What’s Love Got To Do With It, for which she received an Academy Award nomination. Bassett returned as the beloved Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, receiving Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and NAACP Entertainer of the Year awards, with Academy Award, SAG and BAFTA nominations, as well as the Variety Creative Impact in Acting Award. Bassett was also named one of Glamour Magazine’s Women of the Year, and honored as one of both the Time 100 and Time Women of the Year in 2023.

Bassett visitará Salvador, Bahia, o coração cultural do Brasil, durante as celebrações marcantes do Liberatum, de 3 a 5 de novembro de 2023. O Prêmio de Pioneirismo Cultural Liberatum será concedido a Bassett em uma cerimônia oficial na presença de Wole Soyinka, o primeiro Nobel Negro Laureado em Literatura, na Praça Cairu, no dia 5 de novembro, às 18h, durante o Concerto Humanitário Liberatum Black Excellence.

Bassett retornou como a amada Rainha Ramonda em Pantera Negra: Wakanda Forever, recebendo os prêmios Globo de Ouro, Escolha da Crítica e Artista do Ano da NAACP, com indicações ao Oscar, SAG e BAFTA, bem como o prêmio Variety Creative Impact in Acting.
