Liberatum Honours Chief Raoni in London: A Historic Cultural Tribute to the Amazon’s Guardian

International cultural diplomacy organisation Liberatum honoured legendary Indigenous leader Chief Raoni Metuktire with the 13th Liberatum Cultural Honour at a landmark gala held at CÉ LA VI London.

The emotional and powerful tribute brought together global leaders from the arts, activism, politics, and philanthropy to celebrate the 93-year-old Kayapó chief’s lifelong fight to protect the Amazon and Indigenous rights. The evening was co-hosted by a distinguished line-up including Benedict Cumberbatch, Anitta, Bianca Jagger, Baroness Young of Hornsey, British Vogue’s Chioma Nnadi, Trudie Styler and Zac Goldsmith among others. Other notable guests included Julia Fox, Sir Anthony Gormley, Akala, and Dame Helena Kennedy KC.

Earlier that day, Chief Raoni was received at St James’s Palace for a private audience with His Majesty King Charles III, coinciding with the CBA Nature First Economy event — reaffirming his critical voice in the global environmental movement.

The Liberatum ceremony featured heartfelt tributes from co-hosts and supporters including Trudie Styler, Bianca Jagger, and Anitta, alongside moving video tributes showcasing the fragile beauty of the Amazon.

Representing the next generation of Kayapó leadership, Beptuk Metuktire delivered an emotional speech calling for continued international solidarity.

With deep reverence and boundless pride, Liberatum brought together a historic gathering — a convergence of ancestral wisdom, artistic fire, and global conscience.

In an extraordinary private audience with His Majesty King Charles, we united the legendary Chief Raoni Metuktire, along with Patxon Metuktire, Beptuk Metuktire, and Yabuti Metuktire of the Amazon — guardians of the forest and sacred protectors of our planet — with Brazil’s powerhouse and global icon Anitta, young Brazilian creative leader Lucas Vilas of Salvador, Bahia and Liberatum founder Pablo Ganguli from Kolkata, and other leading cultural voices.

This moment was more than a meeting — it was a call to history.

We came together to honour Chief Raoni, whose life has been a defiant and dignified cry for the Earth — a voice that echoes through the canopies of the Amazon and into the conscience of the world. His tireless struggle for the environment and the rights of Indigenous peoples is not just activism — it is heroism in its purest form.

Across continents, across languages, across generations, Indigenous leaders and people of colour are rising — united, urgent, and unafraid. Their voices carry truth. Their stories carry power. And their demands for justice cannot — and will not — be silenced.

This is more than a celebration.
This is a movement.
This is a reckoning.
This is the power of people of colour — unstoppable, undeniable, and essential to humanity’s survival.

His recognition at the Liberatum event in London comes at a pivotal moment for the planet—just two weeks before COP30 in Brazil, at the very heart of the Amazon, where Chief Raoni will play a vital role.

This year, Liberatum will bestow its Cultural Honour upon Chief Raoni Metuktire, the legendary leader of the Kayapo people and global defender of the Amazon, at a momentous cultural ceremony and landmark celebration in London on 15th October 2025 where leading cultural figures, storytellers, visionaries, activists and changemakers of the world will pay tribute to his extraordinary contributions to our planet and his very special achievements as a defender of the Amazon and champion of indigenous rights.

The prestigious Liberatum Cultural Honour ceremony will bring together some of the most iconic and celebrated creative minds of our generation who will pay homage to Raoni and celebrate his life’s mission. The Liberatum Cultural Honour will also salute his immense contributions in promoting cultural understanding and environmental protection throughout the world.

At 93, Raoni is in the twilight of his life. As a living symbol of the fight for the preservation of the Amazon rainforest and indigenous culture, and a great hero of our time, his presence in London to receive the Liberatum Cultural Honour Award will be a historic moment.

LIBERATUM ISTANCOOL ADVENTURES OF ISTANBUL

The streets of Beyoğlu were abuzz with excitement and anticipation about Courtney Love’s secret performance in an intimate space on the second floor of a nondescript building. Hours before Love’s performance, high camp was the order of the day with Tilda Swinton declaring she was not an actress but a fraud to the blue haired Turkish creative force Serra Yilmaz, and the French artist Sophie Calle competing, during her talk, with the call to prayer by the muezzin in a mosque nearby. That very night, a bird decided to relieve himself on her while she was walking through the gardens to the festival gala dinner.

This was the second edition of Liberatum’s dramatic and grand cultural diplomacy celebration in Istanbul. All served in its signature panache by the globe trotting multidisciplinary creative platform. In its inaugural year in Istanbul in 2010, Liberatum surprised, or rather confused everybody, by announcing the event only a few weeks before its commencement. The cast was gloriously mighty. A dizzying mix of the intellectual and the glamorous. From Gore Vidal making wild remarks at almost every passer by including Daphne Guinness to the Nobel Laureate Sir VS Naipaul discussing his childhood in tears with France Sozzani. All open to the public and completely accessible for the whole city. A memorable affair to build a bridge between the creative soul of Turkey and the rest of the world.

Those historic moments took place 15 years ago but why do they feel like only yesterday? That’s the magic of Istanbul merged with the culture making formula of Liberatum. Inspiring communities and promoting understanding between cultures. With some of the greatest minds of our time. And a little bit of glamour and camp never hurt anyone.
